Third Ibali Indaba of 2022: Launch of the Jagger Fire and Recovery Collection
20 April 2022 from 13:00 to 14:00 (SAST)

The third Ibali Indaba webinar of 2022, focusing on the UCT Digital Showcase platform, takes place on Wednesday 20 April with the launch of the Jagger Fire and Recovery Collection. It has been a year since the fire in the Jagger Library and images, descriptions and timelines will take attendees through the event itself, as well as the progress made on the long road back for UCT Libraries.

Call for abstracts: Southern African – Nordic Centre (SANORD)
Deadline: 31 May 2022

SANORD is a network of more than 50 higher education institutions in southern Africa and the Nordic countries of which UCT is a member. It promotes academic collaboration and seeks to address new local and global challenges of innovation and development.

SANORD's annual conference and general meeting is scheduled to happen at the University of Limpopo from 5–7 December 2022. A call for abstracts is currently open with a deadline of 31 May 2022. Limited travel grants are available for authors of successful submissions.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) webinars
Registration deadlines: 14 April 2022; 23 April 2022

Many of the NIH’s Institutional Centers (ICs) produce webinars and webpages to support applicants at all stages of NIH grants. Here are two current opportunities to learn more about applying for and administering an NIH grant. 

Center for Global Mental Health Research, 2022 webinar series: Submission and peer review of NIH grant applications

This webinar will focus on the preparation of grant applications for submission to the NIH, how those applications are processed and routed, and then evaluated through the peer review process. The session will also cover best practices and helpful tips to consider during application preparation to improve the chances of success. More information is available here.

Virtual workshop: NIAID, NIH Post Awards Grants Policy and Management

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) hosts a series of grants policy workshops around the world for foreign grantees as well as U.S. domestic grantees with foreign subcomponents. This workshop will provide essential information about NIAID and NIH post award grants funding policies and requirements, funding opportunity announcements, resources for managing a NIAID award, how to prepare project progress and financial status reports, information for grantees subcontractors, human subjects administrative requirements and information about NIAID financial systems reviews. Call for DHET submissions: creative research outputs
Deadline: 31 May 2022

The Research Office invites research staff to submit their 2019, 2020 and 2021 creative research outputs for submission to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This process results in the DHET awarding subsidies to UCT for creative research outputs in the following subfields: fine and visual arts; music, theatre, performance and dance; design; film and television; and literary arts.

Call for applications: Sarah Baartman Fellowship
Deadline: 19 April 2022

The San and Khoi Centre seeks to appoint a research fellow to honour the life and legacy of Sarah Baartman (c.1789–1815) as symbolic of feminist restorative justice and transformation in higher education in South Africa.

Call for applications reminder: University Equipment Committee (UEC) research equipment 2022
Application deadline: 27 May 2022 

The UEC annual call for research equipment grant applications is open. The UEC considers applications for strategic equipment items that are not covered in the conventional way by faculty equipment committees (FEC).

Applications for category 1 items (under R1.5 million) must be submitted via Faculty Equipment Committee Chairs by 27 May 2022.

Call for applications reminder: Advanced Computing Committee (ACC) research equipment 2022
Application deadline: 13 May 2022

The ACC considers requests for strategic research-related computer equipment and software (including implementation support such as specialised computing services) that are not funded in the conventional way by Faculty IT/Computing Equipment Committees.

Applications must be submitted to a Faculty Advanced Computing Committee Representative by 13 May 2022.

Call for applications: Wellcome Mental Health Data Prize
Internal deadline: 18 April 2022

The Wellcome Data Prize in mental health will support collaborative approaches to research into anxiety and depression in young people. Teams in the UK and South Africa will explore existing data to find new insights and build digital tools that enable future research.

Thinking spatially: how to put your research on a map
13 April 2022 from 13:00 to 14:00 (SAST)

Do you need to make a simple site map for a publication? Or create a complex, repeatable spatial data analysis? Or perhaps you would just like to find out more about Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this session, which forms part of the UCT Digital Scholar Series, you will find out about some of the GIS resources available to you at UCT as well as where and how to find help when working with spatial data.
