The UCT Alan Pifer Research Award is the Vice-Chancellor’s annual prize in recognition of outstanding research that has demonstrable impact on society. Nominations and/or self-nominations are invited for consideration as candidates for the 2021 Alan Pifer Research Award.

The award is offered annually to one or more top researchers at UCT who are engaged in medical, economic, scientific, engineering and social research which has demonstrated impact on, and relevance to, the advancement and welfare of South Africa's disadvantaged people.

The closing date for nominations is Thursday, 31 March 2022. All nominations should be sent to Paul Dantu by email to [email protected]. For further information please contact Paul Dantu.

UCT Research Fairness Initiative (RFI) report

UCT is undertaking the process of submitting our first RFI report to the Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED) as part of our overall commitment to fair partnerships. As part of this effort the Office of Research Integrity would like to invite all researchers who have experience with global partnerships to engage with us on this report.

Engagements will take the form of either an hour-long individual interview, or guided group discussion.  For more details on how to participate click here.

Updates to National Institutes of Health (NIH) forms with effect from 25 January 2022

In June 2021 the DVC: Research and Internationalisation published a DVC Desk regarding two updates to NIH policies and procedures for funding applications, other support forms, and progress reports (RPPR). All submissions due after 25 January 2022 must comply with the new formats and requirements.

Central to the changes is more stringent reporting of the time commitments of NIH-funded researchers on their full suite of grants – both NIH and other grants – to ensure researchers are not committing more than 100% of their time to funded projects. Updates to UCT's electronic Research Administration (eRA) system to help researchers record and track their effort committed to funded projects are forthcoming.

The International Grants Hub will host training on 23 February 2022 to help researchers understand how to track their current effort levels and how to complete the new NIH forms. RSVP for the training here. If you have any questions, please send those to [email protected].

Visit the NIH's dedicated pages, Other Support and Biosketch for full details.

Reminder: Call for applications: UCT research grant for implementing the 4Rs in animal research
Application and nomination deadline: 28 February 2022 at 17:00 SAST

The DVC’s office offers a research grant to support research projects that will result in the implementation of the principles of the 4Rs in animals used for scientific and teaching purposes.

The 4Rs provide a framework for the humane use of animals for scientific and teaching purposes i.e., replacement with appropriate living or non-living models, reduction in number of animals used, refinement in the use of animals (adequate use of enrichment, analgesia, humane endpoints etc.) and responsibility in all aspects of their research such as post procedure welfare monitoring, identification and prompt response to unexpected incidents.

Applicants should be UCT staff members or students and PASS staff are also eligible for the grant. Interested candidates are encouraged to complete the application form which can be accessed here. Only applications submitted using the online form will be considered. The full call document can be accessed here.

Queries can be directed to the Office of Research Integrity.
