Noticeboard

On the Research Announcement noticeboard, we share news and items of interest from the UCT Research Office.

Updates to senior/key personnel section on NIH funding applications

Please note that for NIH funding applications due on or after 25 January 2022, every individual listed on an application as a 'senior/key' person will be required to have an eRA commons profile.

If you do not yet have an eRA commons profile, please email [email protected] and request one. You cannot configure your profile on your own.

Mandatory capturing of research classifications on eRA researcher profile
Deadline: 28 February 2022

In September last year, we introduced the research classifications functionality to the eRA system.

These were implemented and made mandatory in the Researcher Profiles to support reporting by the Research Office for various requirements by government and funding bodies and to support UCT’s world rankings (for example Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which assess the impact of universities against the SDGs).

Please see the previous research announcement

From 1 March 2022, the mandatory fields will be included in the eRA pre-awards module to aid in research reporting and analytics for research funding applications across the organisation. It is therefore important that you update all mandatory fields in your ‘Research Profile’ tab by 28th February 2022

What will happen if I capture this information on my researcher profile?
The ‘Research Related Information' tab in the pre-awards internal approval form will automatically populate from the research classification fields captured on your researcher profile. You will only need to capture this once, for use in all future applications.

What will happen if I do not capture this information on my researcher profile?
If you do not capture the information, each time a new internal approval form is initiated, you will be prompted to enter these mandatory fields to be able to move the form to the next applicable processing stage.

How do I update my researcher profile?
Please follow the instructions in this document

For more information on eRA, please see the eRA section on the Research Support Hub.

If you have any further concerns or require assistance with your eRA profile, please log a call via ServiceNow here.

ASSAf update on the Code of Conduct for Research

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) is facilitating the process to develop a Code of Conduct (CoC) for Research under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

ASSAf is working with stakeholders and service providers to complete the accreditation and publication process of the CoC by August 2022.

Even though the CoC has not been accredited yet, POPIA is in full effect and applies to both existing and future research activities involving identifiable personal information.

In this regard, it is important to remember that the CoC cannot change or detract from the protections provided by POPIA. In other words, the requirements of POPIA will apply even after a CoC is accredited. The CoC will provide certainty by clarifying what POPIA means in the research context and the steps institutions and researchers must take to comply.

ASSAf has provided a guidance document with insights into steps UCT and its researchers can take while awaiting the final CoC.

You can access the recent announcement and the accompanying guidance document here.
