Noticeboard
On the Research Announcement noticeboard, we share news and items of interest from the UCT Research Office.
Connecting your ZivaHub and ORCiD profiles
When you are published on UCT’s open data repository ZivaHub, your research is assigned a DOI (a persistent identifier which labels and creates a reference
for that resource), which helps to make it FAIR - Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.
You may be aware that your ZivaHub profile and all of your data publications can be linked to your ORCiD profile. Once this link is
created, your ZivaHub items will be automatically added to your ORCiD profile after being made public. This way, you do not have to keep manually adding any of your items published on ZivaHub to your ORCiD profile.
This automatic process has recently been updated with some new features and now requires a bit of a restart. We recommend that you re-enable the connection by following these steps:
- Log in to ZivaHub.
- From the top right corner of your profile avatar, select Applications from the drop-down menu.
- Click on the ORCiD settings below the ORCiD icon.
- Right click on disconnect this ORCiD and confirm.
- Then click on Add Account and log on to your ORCiD account.
- Ensure that Push data to my ORCiD is switched to ON.
For more information on the good practice of connecting your accounts, visit the DLS webpage Good Practice: Linking your ZivaHub and ORCiD profiles via DataCite here.
You may also consult all the latest ZivaHub guides here. This announcement together with further reading on the subject, can be downloaded here.

Reminder: UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence Awards
Application deadline: 12 November 2022
Under the leadership of the DVC for Research & Internationalisation, Professor Sue Harrison, the UCT Research Office announces its third call for the UCT Enabling Grant Seeker Excellence Awards.
In the context of an increasingly unpredictable national research funding environment, the purpose of this intervention is to encourage applications to external – particularly international – funders.
Please see the call document for the eligibility criteria, a link to the application form and other requirements.
Please direct all queries to Robyn Udemans.
Research capacity building
Below we share events, workshops and webinars that offer capacity-building opportunities for the UCT research community.

In this popular ERP webinar, you will hear from an editor and a reviewer, A/Prof Dale Taylor (ADP) & Prof Brandon Collier-Reed (Mechanical Engineering), what they look for, and discuss tips with other participants who are in fields similar to yours.
Please RSVP by 9 November 2021 to [email protected].
Research IDs & research profiles
17 November 2021 13:00 - 14:00
The starting point for assessing your research impact is to make sure your work is correctly attributed to you across all different platforms. A research ID is like a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for a researcher. It distinguishes you from other
researchers, demonstrates the uniqueness and impact of your research and increases the visibility of your scholarship.
Increasingly journals, funders, publishers and institutions (including UCT) require a unique ID. For example, the NRF requires all researchers and students applying for funding and rating to have an ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID). Your
ORCiD should also be integrated into the UCT eRA system.
This webinar introduces: Scopus Author ID, Web of Science (Publons) Researcher ID - Publons also tracks your peer review), ORCiD and Google Scholar Research Profile.
Please RSVP by 15 November 2021 to [email protected].
Call for expressions of interest: UCT Engaged Scholarship Programme 2022
Application deadline: 30 November 2021
Are you interested in enhancing the quality and societal impact of your research, teaching or innovation through community or public engagement? Would you like to work with others, across faculties, to develop your capacity for research, teaching
and innovation that involves groups external to the university? Would you like to be part of a group that helps to shape an institutional culture which supports, recognises and rewards engaged scholarship?
If so, you might like to participate in the 2022 Engaged Scholarship
Programme. Offered under the auspices of the Research Office and the University Social Responsiveness Committee, the Engaged Scholarship Programme provides a space for professional development for UCT academic staff and postdoctoral fellows who
wish to embed high quality engagement in their research and/or teaching, and are interested in the transformative possibilities of engaged scholarship.
More details about the programme as well as details on the procedure and deadline for expressions of interest, can be downloaded here.
For a list of selection criteria, a copy of the commitment form and further information, please contact Sonwabo Ngcelwane.
