Call for expressions of interest: African Academy of Sciences African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence Pilot Programme (ARISE-PP)
UCT intention-to-submit deadline: Wednesday, 7 July 2021
eRA internal proposal approval (forms to reach final faculty approver): Friday, 23 July 2021
Final external funder deadline: Friday, 30 July 2021 (16:00 SAST)

The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence Pilot Programme (ARISE-PP) is open for expressions of interest from talented early-career researchers (2-7 years post-PhD) who have already produced excellent work, are ready to work independently and demonstrate potential to be a research leader.

This pilot programme is an opportunity for applicants to further develop their research career and become principal researchers leading their own independent research team and project. The ARISE-PP grants are open to applications from all fields of research, although proposals should consider the priorities of the African Union and European Union High Level Policy Dialogue on Science Technology and Innovation (public health, green transition, innovation and technology, capacities for science).

Please see here for more detailed information about the call, the application requirements and process. Please submit your intention-to-submit form here

Call for applications: Wellcome Leap Program Multi-Channel Psych: Revealing Mechanisms of Anhedonia
UCT intention-to-submit deadline: Thursday, 8 July 2021
eRA internal proposal approval (forms to reach final faculty approver): Friday, 15 July 2021
Final external funder deadline: Friday, 22 July 2021 (17:59 SAST)

Wellcome Leap Inc., a non-profit company, aims to deliver innovative breakthroughs in human global health over 5-10 years. The Multi-Channel Psych: Revealing Mechanisms of Anhedonia programme is soliciting abstracts and proposals aiming to contribute to an environment where diagnosing anhedonic depression is as straightforward as getting a mammogram, and stratification into a treatment plan has the same speed as current algorithms after breast biopsy.

This necessitates a general shift of mindset in an important way. Rapid, targeted intervention is considered a vital tool to prevent the progression of depression. Initially selecting the treatment with the highest likelihood of working for an individual patient based on their specific biology is therefore of high value, because in addition to decreasing the total time of suffering, key goals include avoiding unnecessary side effects.

Please see here for more detailed information about the call, the application requirements and process. You can submit your intention-to-submit form here

NRF call: Equipment-related travel and training grants 2021/22
UCT internal deadline: Monday, 16 August 2021

The NRF's equipment-related travel and training grants (ERTTG) support the broader science research community with access to state-of-the-art equipment that is not available at the home research institution, regionally and nationally and to access natural science collections such as those located at museums. This includes access to synchrotron facilities and other global research infrastructure. It also provides for the facilitation of workshops that focus on on-site training of instrumentation specialists, technicians, operators, researchers, and postgraduates (masters and doctoral) students.

Applications will be considered for support for travel and training activity taking place from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022.

For any queries, researchers are invited to contact Zam Ndzotyana at [email protected].

Please see here for more detailed information about the call, the application requirements and process.

Call for applications: NRF/DFG partnership on International Research Training Groups (IRTGs)
UCT internal deadline: Monday, 16 August 2021

The German Research Foundation (DFG) and the NRF provide for the possibility to support a joint workshop for the preparation of an international research training group (IRTG) proposal. Funding can be granted only if research cooperation is already established and plans for the IRTG have already been consolidated. Funding for the joint workshops may either be applied for prior to the submission of an IRTG draft proposal or after positive evaluation of an IRTG draft proposal but prior to submission of an IRTG full proposal.

You can download details about the call here and please direct all queries to Roshan Sonday at [email protected].

NRF call: Knowledge, interchange and collaboration (KIC)
UCT internal deadline: Monday, 23 August 2021 (09:00 SAST)

UCT researchers are invited to apply for grants for travel or scientific events taking place between 1 January and 30 June 2022.

Funding for KIC support is for researchers and PhD students with no allocated travel support through any other current NRF funding. Applicants should only apply for travel and hosting of a physical meeting if they are confident and can show strong evidence that such meetings can and/or will take place. It must be noted upfront that no carry forwards will be allowed for postponed or cancelled events.

The NRF is however cognisant that some virtual gatherings may require financial support for hosting and/or registration fee, attendance/participation, and therefore applications for such support accompanied by strong motivation and evidence will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Only applications endorsed by the UCT Research Office will be considered for funding by the NRF in 2022.

For any queries, researchers are invited to contact Zam Ndzotyana at [email protected].

Please see here for more detailed information about the call, the application requirements and process.
