Dear colleagues
Meet the new executive director: research, Dr Linda Mtwisha, at our virtual research function on Thursday 12 November, as we reflect on the year that has been and look ahead to the year to come.
During this short virtual event, we will also celebrate the recipient of the 2019 Alan Pifer Award, the vice-chancellor’s annual prize in recognition of outstanding welfare-related research. Professor Elmi Muller, a global authority on kidney and
liver transplantation, is being honoured for her dedication to making organ transplantation available to vulnerable people.
We will also bid farewell to Dr Dale Peters, director of UCT eResearch, who will be retiring at the end of the year. Dr Peters has played an extraordinary role in establishing eResearch at UCT and promoting multi-institutional collaboration in
eResearch across the rest of South Africa.
The programme of less than an hour will run as follows:
- Welcome by the host, Professor Sue Harrison, deputy vice-chancellor for research and internationalisation
- Overview of the year’s research highlights by the vice-chancellor, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng
- Celebrating the recipient of the 2019 Alan Pifer Award: Professor Elmi Muller, head of UCT's Division of General Surgery
- Farewell to Dr Dale Peters, director of UCT eResearch
- ‘What will 2021 bring for research at UCT?’, a conversation between Professor Phakeng, Professor Harrison and Dr Linda Mtwisha, executive director of research. This is also an opportunity to ask questions of the three leaders of the research
endeavour at UCT
- Launch of the annual publication Research Highlights 2019/20 (including a special section on COVID-19 research at UCT) and eResearch Report 2019/20.
Register here for the research function.
We look forward to seeing you there!
