The exhibition NUTRIA, by Stephen Symons, a PhD student at the Centre for African Studies, falls under the heritage project initiative of The Castle and will run from 5 – 15 June 2017.
NUTRIA – Imprints of Conscription into the South African Defence Force (SADF) aims to examine how memories of the conscription of white males into the former SADF enter a contested present.
Symons believes that these memories can be navigated, acknowledged and disrupted effectively within a creative sphere.
The exhibition presents a series of creative engagements exploring the militarised pasts of ex-SADF conscripts, in the hope of encouraging further conversations relating to the hidden and oft silenced histories of all South Africans.
The opening address with Professor Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela will take place on Monday, 5 June, at 18:00.
