In a commemorative ceremony held at the Faculty of Health Sciences on Monday, 30 July 2018, staff and students paid tribute to Professor Bongani Mayosi, the dean of the faculty, who passed away tragically on Friday.

Hundreds of students and staff, as well as colleagues from the health services, gathered in the Health Sciences Plaza to mourn the passing of one of UCT’s most beloved leaders. The student- and staff-led ceremony saw members of the medical community share their memories, love and respect for the prolific academic, whose scientific achievements earned him international renown.

The afternoon ceremony was followed by a candlelight vigil that began in the evening and provided an opportunity for students to reflect and remember the late Professor Mayosi and to offer one another support and comfort.

The University of Cape Town mourns the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who left us on the morning of Friday, 27 July. While this is a very difficult time for both students and staff, particularly those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, it is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible life of one of the university’s finest academics and researchers.
