The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) interdisciplinary Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) kicks off its 2019 programme with the launch on Saturday, 16 February, of its highly-anticipated new book, Acts of Transgression: Contemporary Live Art in South Africa.

The first book on live art in the country, it has been described by Okwui Enwezor, artistic director of the 56th Venice Bienniale, as an “illuminating and indispensable gathering of the most critical voices thinking today about the role of performance in the shaping of the self, identity, agency, community and nation”.

Acclaimed visual artist Sikhumbuzo Makandula and renowned singer/songwriter Mthwakazi will present a new iteration, created specifically for the launch event, of Makandula’s performance Ingoma ka Tiyo Soga, while experimental artist Mx Blouse is also set to perform.

Speakers at the launch will include Deputy Dean of Humanities Associate Professor Shose Kessi, and book editors Associate Professor Jay Pather and Catherine Boulle.

The event, on the penultimate day of Cape Town Art Week, starts at 17:30 for 18:00 at UCT’s Hiddingh Campus on Saturday, 16 February.

Bongani Mayosi

1967–2018

The University of Cape Town mourns the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who left us on the morning of Friday, 27 July. While this is a very difficult time for both students and staff, particularly those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, it is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible life of one of the university’s finest academics and researchers.
