UCT’s Children’s Institute will live-stream an important symposium discussing violence against women and children, and the impact on families.

The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Children’s Institute will host a live stream of a symposium addressing the impact of violence within families as part of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Human Development Conference (CoE-HUMAN 2018) on Wednesday, 21 November.

The symposium, titled Children, Families and the State: Collaboration and Contestation, is convened by institute director Professor Shanaaz Mathews, who warns that South Africa needs to be cognisant of the links between Violence Against Women (VAW) and Violence Against Children (VAC) in the national context in order to effectively address the common risks.

Dr Alessandra Guedes, an expert on the links between VAW and VAC at the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization, will lay the foundation for the symposium by highlighting the evidence and insights at a global level.

In her speech, Mathews will address the issue of violence in the lives of children, highlighting lessons from the Birth to 20+ study.

Other speakers include Mercilene Machisa from the South African Medical Research Council, Lisa Vetten from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of the Witwatersrand, and Siza Magangoe, from the Department of Social Development.

CoE-HUMAN 2018 is being held from 20 to 21 November in Johannesburg, providing an academic platform for researchers to present their latest research findings and to describe emerging research questions on issues topical to the theme.

For more information about the conference, visit www.wits.ac.za.

The symposium will run from 14:00 to 15:30 on Wednesday 21 November.

Bongani Mayosi

1967–2018

The University of Cape Town mourns the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who left us on the morning of Friday, 27 July. While this is a very difficult time for both students and staff, particularly those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, it is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible life of one of the university’s finest academics and researchers.
