Curriculum Change Framework and other updates

16 November 2018 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Curriculum Change Framework feedback

The Curriculum Change Working Group has completed the work it initiated in 2016 and its report, the Curriculum Change Framework, has been released for comment. Engaging with the report is a fundamental step in an institutional dialogue about curriculum and the meanings and practices of curriculum change across disciplines.

2. The need for transformation through conversation

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng discusses the need to support transformation through conversation, engagement and negotiation. She further explains the university’s actions regarding the “one settler, one bullet” comments that were made recently, which both she and the university have distanced themselves from.

3. End of examination period

End-of-year examinations were concluded on Wednesday, 14 November. A total of 14 793 students sat for 55 779 sessions at 61 venues, marking a successful end to the academic year. Results will be available from 12 December via the self-service option on PeopleSoft.

4. Apply for NSFAS funding

Applications to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for funding for the 2019 academic year close on 30 November 2018. No late applications will be accepted after this closing date.

Only students with a maximum household income of R350 000 per annum are eligible. Students funded by NSFAS in 2018 are automatically funded for the duration of their studies, provided they meet the academic requirements, and do not need to reapply.

NSFAS agents are available should applicants need assistance with applying at the university Financial Aid Office or the National Youth Development Agency. If you are applying manually or online via www.nsfas.org.za, please ensure that you attach all required documents. Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply, as NSFAS allocates a special disability fund to all approved students. Please note that NSFAS only considers applications for studies towards selected postgraduate courses, which can be viewed on the NSFAS website.

5. Reminder: Extended ICTS maintenance

Information and Communication Technology Services’ (ICTS) scheduled maintenance slot will proceed as planned on Sunday, 18 November 2018. However, due to additional Network Renewal work, the slot will be extended – running from 08:00 to 22:00. Unless advised to the contrary, please do not expect any ICTS services to be available for the duration of the maintenance slot. For more information, please read the ICTS notice.

Bongani Mayosi

1967–2018

The University of Cape Town mourns the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who left us on the morning of Friday, 27 July. While this is a very difficult time for both students and staff, particularly those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, it is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible life of one of the university’s finest academics and researchers.
