In remembrance: Liam Alexander Reid

It is with deep sympathy that we inform you of the passing of Mr Liam Alexander Reid (39) at his home, surrounded by close family and friends, on 16 August 2018, following a prolonged illness.
Mr Reid was a teacher at the UCT English Language Centre. He played an integral role in building the school and was one of its first teachers when it had only three students.
He has been described as someone who was very calm, centred, who loved life and his family. His way of challenging others’ way of thinking or bringing a very different perspective to the table was valued by those who knew him.
His colleagues say Mr Reid brought a wealth of his own real-life experiences into the classroom, including being a stuntman and a boat builder. His approach to teaching was very laid back, although he went exactly where students needed him to go, and this resulted in some very interesting discussions.
Mr Reid was involved in research to investigate the use of mobile technology in the classroom and had completed an honours degree in Education at UCT in 2017.
He spent time at the St Luke’s Hospice in Kenilworth during his illness. Following numerous requests from colleagues and friends as to how they could assist, the family has asked that donations be made to the Hospice.
Mr Reid is survived by his parents, daughter, partner and siblings.
The university has reached out to offer support to the Reid family and our heartfelt condolences go out to them and all who knew Mr Reid.

Bongani Mayosi
1967–2018
The University of Cape Town mourns the passing of Professor Bongani Mayosi, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, who left us on the morning of Friday, 27 July. While this is a very difficult time for both students and staff, particularly those in the Faculty of Health Sciences, it is also a time to reflect on and celebrate the incredible life of one of the university’s finest academics and researchers.
