Noticeboard

On the Research Announcement noticeboard, we share news and items of interest from the UCT Research Office.

UCT Knowledge Co-op topics for socially responsive research

The UCT Knowledge Co-op engages community groups around the research they consider useful for their work. These topics are available for honours or master's dissertations and for academics' personal research.

The Co-op facilitates discussions to ensure the resulting proposal fits the requirements of both the community partner and UCT. Dissertations follow the usual departmental timeframe and process with support from the Co-op throughout.

The Co-op's website has just been updated to show more than 100 topics to choose from. Discipline-specific lists and more information are available on request.

Call for applications: Digital Humanities Open Educational Resources (OER) Champions Initiative
Application deadline: 15 February 2022

Scholars from South African universities are invited to apply to participate in the Digital Humanities Open Educational Resources (OER) Champions Initiative.

This is an initiative of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) through the ESCALATOR Digital Champions Initiative and the NWU UNESCO Chair on Multimodal Learning and Open Educational Resources.

The programme aims to stimulate activism and research around the use and/or creation of OER for the digital humanities (DH) at universities in South Africa. This 12-month programme involves the following:

  • A grant of R20 000 for individuals or groups working on a project to develop OERs that will support the growth of DH capacity and related skills in South Africa (adaptation, text editing, and/or research expenses)
  • Opportunities to attend workshops on DH OERs, open licensing, and open pedagogy
  • Discussion sessions to relate general OER sessions to the DH context
  • Support to create or adapt open educational resources such as open textbooks, online tutorials, wikibooks, or combinations of open learning objects
  • Support and workshops on how to research DH OERs and write up the research
  • Commitment of approximately 4 – 10 hours per month depending on the project’s scope.

This is an ideal opportunity for researchers, lecturers, and postgraduate students interested in including new online resources in their teaching or adapting their resources to their students' specific contexts to receive support and funding for creating or adapting open learning content and researching the process.

Two forthcoming open Q&A sessions will answer questions related to the programme, schedule, content, and application process. You can also join these sessions to discuss your project idea:

  • 25 January 2022 @ 9:00 – 10:00 am SAST
  • 8 February 2022 @ 16:00 – 17:00 pm SAST

Sign up for these Q&A sessions by completing this form. For more information about this initiative and to apply, please click here.

Reminder: Future Professors Programme | Fellowship in Academic Excellence and Leadership
Application deadline: 11 February 2022

The Future Professors Programme (FPP) is a national collaborative programme aimed at developing qualities of academic excellence and leadership among a select pool of academic staff, with an emphasis on black and women scholars.

This call, the third and final for phase 1 of this programme, seeks to identify a group of the country’s most talented young academics to benefit from a structured and intense programme aimed at accelerating their readiness for the professoriate.

Academics preferably – but not exclusively – in the lecturer and senior lecturer categories in South African public universities may be nominated by their universities. Applicants should hold a doctorate and have already presented clear indications in their scholarly work of advancement towards the senior ranks of the academy. An NRF rating or similar external markers of scholarly standing are a strong recommendation.

The programme is not a developmental but a preparatory programme. Each university may nominate a maximum of five candidates. From these nominations, a cohort will be selected for the programme which will commence in January 2023.

For details on the application process, contact Mrs Fazeela Felton.
