Uyinene Mrwetyana: A week of mourning and reflection

Uyinene Mrwetyana, a first-year UCT student, went missing on Saturday, 24 August. A desperate yet hopeful search ensued in the days that followed. But then, on Monday, 2 September, the worst news was confirmed: Nene was found murdered.

Immediately, the university community commenced a period of mourning in Nene's honour. This included prayer circles, night vigils, protest action and a memorial.

We need to strengthen our commitment to prevent and deal with sexual and gender-based violence at all levels.

UCT will continue to work with all staff, students and society at large to tackle this scourge.
