July graduation and other updates

11 July 2019 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. July graduation

A total of 389 students will be honoured at the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) winter graduation, which will take place at 10:00 on Friday, 12 July 2019, in the Sarah Baartman Hall on upper campus. During this ceremony an honorary doctorate will be conferred on political activist and liberation stalwart Denis Goldberg. This is in recognition of his courageous role in the anti-apartheid struggle.

2. Eduroam now available in Cape Town public libraries

UCT students and staff can now access Eduroam in 57 of the City of Cape Town’s public libraries. The move is believed to be the first instance of Eduroam being hosted on city-wide and city-owned infrastructure in Africa.

3. Special screening of Life is Wonderful: Mandela’s Unsung Heroes

The Development and Alumni Department will host a special screening of the documentary Life is Wonderful: Mandela’s Unsung Heroes on Thursday, 18 July, in Lecture Theatre 2 in the Kramer Building. Staff and students are invited to this screening, which is in support of the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust’s House of Hope Arts, Culture and Education Centre, a fundraising drive to build a youth centre in Hout Bay. The documentary is about the legal arguments used in the Rivonia Trial and features anti-apartheid activist and philanthropist Denis Goldberg. Tickets for the screening cost R50 and include complimentary refreshments and popcorn.

4. Second call for Teaching Innovation Grant applications

Improving the teaching and learning experience is one of the core focuses of UCT. Individual academics, departments or teams are encouraged to apply for the Teaching Innovation Grant, which is aimed at funding various initiatives to bolster teaching at the university. Grants of up to R20 000 are available to support such projects.
