Screening of film featuring UCT honorary graduate and other updates

04 July 2019 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. Special screening of film featuring UCT honorary graduate

As part of the Development and Alumni Department’s Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series, UCT students and staff are invited to a special screening of Life is Wonderful: Mandela’s Unsung Heroes, a documentary film by Nick Stadlen on the story of the legal arguments used in the Rivonia Trial. The film features South African icon, anti-apartheid activist, philanthropist and UCT alumnus Denis Goldberg. The special screening is taking place on Thursday, 18 July 2019, from 17:00 to 21:00. The screening is in support of the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust’s House of Hope Art and Culture Education Centre, a fundraising drive to build a youth centre in Hout Bay.

At a graduation ceremony on 12 July, UCT will honour Goldberg by awarding him with an honorary doctorate in recognition of his courageous and selfless role in the country’s anti-apartheid struggle.

2. Council statement on the IRTC

The recommendations of the Institutional Reconciliation and Transformation Commission (IRTC) Steering Committee assisted the UCT Council in its consideration of the IRTC report at the Council meeting on Saturday, 22 June. The advice of the vice-chancellor and the UCT executive on how the university needs to take the work of the IRTC and its recommendations forward was welcomed. The UCT Council was appreciative of the work done by the IRTC Steering Committee, which was made up of representatives from 16 different UCT constituencies. It was recognised that an enormous amount of time and effort was put into the process.

3. Feedback from latest Council meeting

The UCT Council met on Saturday, 22 June 2019, to deliberate on issues pertinent to the university. These included, among others, the vice-chancellor’s report, the report by the IRTC Steering Committee, the universityʼs Strategic Plan 2030, and the appointment of a new chancellor for the period commencing 2020.

4. Maintenance to impact ICT systems

Information and Communication Technology Services (ICTS) will perform important network renewal work this weekend, 6–7 July. As a result, there will be interruptions to ICT services – including Eduroam.
