UCT's Rhodes statue to be removed at 17h00 today

The Cecil John Rhodes statue on the University of Cape Town's Upper Campus will be removed at 17h00 today, following a decision by the UCT Council at a special sitting held on 8 April 2015.

The statue will be removed and taken to a safe location which has been approved by Heritage Western Cape. Trevor Thorold, a conservation architect and heritage consultant from Cape Town, and professional sculptor Emeritus Professor Gavin Younge from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT, have advised on technical aspects of the statue's removal and will attend the event.
