HERS-SA workshops planned

03 November 2003

HERS-SA, the managed network that aims to improve the status of women in higher education in South Africa, is gaining ground. In August and September the first HERS-SA Academy was held at the Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town, a weeklong programme attended by 55 women from higher education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa.

The workshops planned for November and December are:

  • Gender Equity in Commonwealth Higher Education: Power and Politics (November 6). The presenters include Dr Louise Morley (University of London), Professor Abiola Odejide (University of Ibadan, Nigeria), Prof Joy Kwesiga (Makerere University, Uganda) and Lesley Shackleton from UCT.
  • The weekend workshop from December 5-6 covers three topics: Career Advancement; Self Management Skills for Women; and Sex, Lies and Separate Worlds: The Politics of Higher Education. Delegates will be required to stay overnight in Simon's Town on December 5 as an important aspect of these workshops is the opportunity to network with colleagues.
